Springdale, SC - On Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 8 AM – 11 AM, the Springdale Police Department, in collaboration with Serve & Connect and the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition, will host the second annual Daddy & Me 5K. The event features a 5K run followed by activities, including Daddy Olympics, where dads compete in a fun obstacle course involving a stroller race and more. Event attendees can also enjoy the splash pad and music. Hamburgers and hotdogs will also be available.
The event is led by Springdale’s former police chief Kevin Cornett, whose own experience inspired him to create the 5K last year. “I spent most of my teenage years without a father figure to guide me,” shared Cornett. “I taught myself to shave and properly tie a tie. I learned to be a gentleman from television and from the random people that touched my life in some way. I wanted a way to celebrate dads and also raise money to support the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition.”
Proceeds from the run will benefit the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition, a nonprofit organization focused on engaging fathers in the positive support of their children. The organization provides free services that include education, job readiness, men’s health education, legal education, parenting, spiritual development, referrals, job assistance, drug/alcohol education and peer support. Last year, it served 1,311 fathers and saved taxpayers $2.84 million in incarceration costs through its Jobs Not Jail Program.
Families are encouraged to attend. Awards will be provided to the top runners in each age group. An award will also be presented to the father-child team dressed in the best costume. Runners can register on Strictly Running. Enjoyment of the other activities is free of charge.
