One person dies in collision Friday evening near Pelion

Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) – One person has died in a crash that involved three vehicles near Pelion Friday evening. The accident happened at US Hwy. 178 near Fogle Road between the town of Pelion and Fairview crossroads. This crash happened around 6:00 p.m.

According to the SCHP, workers were preparing to close Hwy. 178 near Fogle Road where crews had been doing some road work over the last several months. People who regularly travel the road had gotten used to sitting in the construction zone traffic, ironically work that is supposed to make the highway safer for travelers once it’s finished. Traffic had already stopped for the construction flagman when a Chevrolet pickup hit a smaller truck in the rear that had already stopped for the construction work. That truck that was first hit, a Chevrolet Colorado, was knocked it into another one in waiting in line, sandwiching it between the two pickups. All came to rest in a tangled mess. The person riding in the Colorado that was rear-ended was in cardiac arrest when first responders arrived from the Pelion fire station. Eventually, that individual was pronounced dead from injuries suffered in the crash.

All of the drivers involved were transported to a hospital to be treated. None of the construction workers were injured. The name of the person killed has not yet been released by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.
