Lexington County crews in Chapin get help from three other agencies with barn fire

Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) – A barn was destroyed by fire Friday morning on Cannon Road between Sid Bickley and Wessinger Road near Hilton. The fire was dispatched just after 9:30 a.m. The first truck coming out of the Chapin station on East Boundary Street reported seeing a heavy column of black smoke in the sky well before they arrived.

The first fire engine to arrive was out of Lexington County’s Crossroads station. They found an old pole-style, two-story barn that was approximately 40’x50’ well involved in flames. Battalion #1 was responding out of Lexington and he requested that resources from Columbia-Richland and Newberry County respond to assist. Manpower and a water tanker came out of Richland County and a tanker was dispatched out of Newberry County’s Little Mountain Station. A truck from another portion of Lexington County and an engine and manpower from the Irmo Fire District were moved to cover Chapin’s area while all their resources were tied up.

Firefighters at the scene fought the fire with handlines while water was shuttled to them. Eventually, the fire was brought under control. The first fire officer to arrive on the fire said that the building didn’t appear to have power on it, nor was it being used. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
