Red Bank, SC (Paul Kirby) – An old structure caught fire and burned in the woods near the intersection of Platt Springs and Old Orangeburg Roads around 5:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The fire was reported by multiple callers and the flames and heavy smoke could easily been seen from the road for some distance.
Equipment and manpower responded from Lexington County’s Fire Service and EMS. They were assisted by deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Platt Springs Road was completely closed between South Lake and Old Orangeburg when the firefighters had to stretch a supply hose from a hydrant on the opposite side of the road from the fire.
The firefighters brought the fire under control at about 5:38 p.m. after they aggressively attacked the flames. A rehab area was set up and a specially equipped truck responded to help keep the crews cool and in good health in the high ambient temperature plus the heat of the fire.
The building was a total loss. No cause of the fire has been released.
