Red Bank, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington BMX is hosting the Southeast Regional Qualifier for the Gold Cup of BMX this weekend. The competition will be held on Saturday, June 27th in Red Bank. Registration and warm-ups are from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and racing will start at 1:00 p.m.
BMX is defined by Wikipedia as a type of off-road bicycle race. It is a sprint race on a purpose-built, off-road, single lap racetrack. The track usually consists of a starting gate for up to eight racers. The cyclist rides a groomed, serpentine, dirt racecourse made of various jumps and rollers to a finish line. The Red Bank Arena course in Lexington County is owned by the Lexington County Recreation & Aging Commission.
According to bmx.com, riders from both the US and Canada may race a Gold Cup Final in any region. The Gold Cup Series is presented by DK Bikes. Riders can count his or her best two scores from Gold Cup events toward winning. According to the Gold Cup State or Provincial Points Table, the riders’ scores from this Saturday and Sunday’s Regionals may be used at the Gold Cup Final. The Southeast Gold Cup Finals is scheduled for September 27th thru 29th in Clemmons, NC.
In the Gold Cup Finals, winners are awarded a Gold Cup jacket and a #1 plate in each age and skill level. Other winners are awarded a Gold Cup #2 and #3 plate depending upon where they place. Finally, at the Regional Finals, both Saturday and Sunday in some areas, quadruple District Points can be earned by a rider.
According to Ralla Kuhns, a coordinator for the Lexington County track, the event Saturday at the Red Bank Arena and Track has no cost of admission for spectators.
