Lexington Kids Collect 2000 Cans for the Hungry

Lexington, SC (Ireland Kost) - Over 2000 canned food items were collected for the hungry by children attending the Vacation Bible School at Northside Baptist Church. Making a difference in the Lexington area, these young people were challenged to bring in canned food items each morning. They did this before the VBS activities of the day began at the church on Sunset Boulevard. They didn't disappoint when it comes to impacting their community.

During the week of VBS (June 24th-28th) hundreds of kids ages K-4 through 7th grade poured through the church doors. By week’s end, the program had averaged 446 kids per day. Pastor David Ford, the minister of children, described the week as being, "Surrounded by fun, games, food, and crazy events." The theme for the VBS was video games, and the church was decorated like an arcade. The theme reminded kids they could reach the "next level" in their Christian faith. Children enjoyed crafts, singing, videos, Bible lessons, games, contests, and more.

The large number of cans collected was a huge blessing. Mission Columbia, an outreach organization associated with Northside Baptist Church, received the food and were overjoyed at the results of the food drive. "Mission Columbia would like to say thank you to Northside Baptist Church VBS kids and youth for helping feed the least, lost, and last in our community!" they stated in a Facebook post. "It's great to serve with a Church that is Mission driven!!"

Providing the VBS kids with an opportunity to help the homeless was not only a huge blessing to those in need, but also cultivated good character in the children who brought the donations.

"The kids have a better understanding of reaching out to help someone in need," said Ford. “It helps them understand that the church as a community and social organization is much more effective when we work together," he continued. "It makes the kids realize that together we're better."

If you missed VBS, there are other events for kids coming to Northside Baptist Church soon. Registrations for Upward Flag Football and Cheerleading has opened for the upcoming season. Superheroes Batman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman will be coming to close the summer. Additionally, the Crazy Tie Guy and Family are lined up for more family-friendly fun at the church.
