Woman critically injured on I-20 near Mineral Springs Road Tuesday

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – A woman was gravely injured Tuesday when she was run over by a tractor trailer truck after being involved in a collision on I-20 east near the 59 mm. Sources say the woman had gotten out of the vehicle she was driving and didn't appear to be trying to get to the shoulder of the road after being involved in the first collision. She was still on the interstate’s surface when she fell in the path of a tractor trailer truck that ran over her causing her injuries.

Traffic was backed up for miles as motorists crawled around the accident location. The first emergency responders also became mired in the traffic and some had to abandon their trucks and hike in. Eventually, as the initial personnel arrived on the scene, they began to direct other units to run west down the east lanes of I-20 from Sunset Boulevard to the scene. Once they arrived, the woman was loaded into an ambulance and transported to Prisma’s Palmetto Richland Campus. She was being treated in the trauma center there according to law enforcement officers.

The original collision and the circumstances surrounding the woman’s actions afterward are being investigated by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the SC Highway Patrol.
