Coroner identifies woman killed on I-20 Tuesday in bizarre crash

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the woman who died after being run over by tractor-trailer following a multiple vehicle collision that occurred on I-20 eastbound at mile marker 59 shortly before 11:00 a.m. yesterday. According to Coroner Fisher, Maliyah Smith, 19, of East Point, Georgia was pronounced dead at an area hospital due to the injuries she sustained.

According to law enforcement, Smith was driving a stolen vehicle that collided with several other vehicles on I-20. Following the collision, Smith reportedly ran out onto the interstate where she attempted to jump onto a moving tractor-trailer. Smith missed her jump and fell onto the road’s surface. She was struck by the truck and trailer when she fell.

The incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
