Amick’s guns opens in Cayce with larger shop and showroom

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – Amick’s Guns, formerly of Gaston, has opened a new shop in Cayce. The business is located at 2335 Airport Boulevard just outside the main entrance to the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

Amick’s Guns is owned by master gunsmiths Jimmy and Brad Amick. Jimmy is Brad’s father. Brad followed in his dad’s footsteps in several ways. Both have dedicated their lives to serving the community and both have a passion for quality guns. Jimmy retired from the Lexington County Fire Service as a driver/operator after 34 years. Brad is still a battalion chief with the county fire service. He’s served since 1995.

Jimmy started gunsmithing when a friend brought him a broken shotgun years ago. He repaired the Mossberg 500 and enjoyed the work. “I was hooked after that,” he said. Already an expert welder, Jimmy took to the trade naturally. Now with several decades of experience, Jimmy Amick is who gunsmiths refer customers to when they get stuck with something they can’t repair.

For years, the business was behind Jimmy’s home in Gaston. It outgrew that space and they began searching for another spot. They decided on the Cayce location because it’s right in the center of the state. It also has three interstates nearby. “We plotted where our customers lived on a map and then tried to land in a central location for them,” Brad explained.

“A lot of people don’t do what we do,” Jimmy said during a recent interview. He explained a master gunsmith can do everything needed to keep a firearm up and shooting accurately. “Often when someone brings us a gun, he doesn’t know what he wants done. He just knows his gun misses when he shoots. We look at the overall system, the firearm and the shooter; We identify the core issue of the inaccuracy and repair that. Sometimes, there can be more than one problem,” Amick said.

Brad went on to explain that building and selling very accurate weapons is a process. There’s no such thing as a one size fits all gun. “When we have a customer that wants a precision gun, we invite them into a consultation room and ask them questions. Oftentimes, customers have no idea what they want. They do know what they’re planning to do with their gun. We go from there.” After the Amicks listen to the customer, they make a recommendation. Then, they discuss the budget and the weapon’s price. “We can work with any reasonable budget. We build highly accurate guns that are tuned for the specific shooter. They can be expensive, but they will be something that can be passed from generation to generation.” Jimmy finished by saying, “We don’t build what we like, we build guns based on the needs of the customer. These are not off the shelf guns from a nationwide retail store. Those are no comparison to our quality and accuracy.” Amicks still sells brands known around the world at reasonable prices. “We’re just going to help you decide what’s best for you before you buy,” Brad said.

The Amicks have added a team of instructors to their business. They’ll teach long range shooting, tactics, the concealed weapons course, and various other related skills. Brad said their instructors are veterans of the military, law enforcement, and other agencies. “These guys are some of the best,” Brad said. “It’s their experience that makes them leaders in their fields.”

Amicks will stock more guns, ammunition, accessories, and suppressors now. They also built a larger work area that will accommodate additional gunsmiths. “We have everything need to repair guns, now we’re looking at some newer CNC equipment to increase our custom fabrication business,” Brad finished.

Beside standard long guns, the Amicks also build, tune, and sell handguns, sniper rifles, and shotguns. They also have their own line of suppressors and resell a catalog full of accessories.

Amick’s Guns will be open Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. They are closed all major holidays. You can reach them at (803) 796-1376.
