School District Five concert band selected to perform at Columbia conference

Irmo, SC - The Symphonic Wind Ensemble at Irmo High School International School for the Arts has been invited to perform as a featured ensemble at the South Carolina Music Educators Association’s Professional Development Conference in Columbia on February 7, 2020.

"It is an incredible honor for the Irmo Symphonic Winds to be selected to perform at the 2020 South Carolina Music Educators Association's Professional Development Conference,” said Roger Simpson, Irmo High School Director of Bands. “The students are looking forward to the opportunity to perform for music educators from around the state. We are currently in the process of selecting literature that will highlight the strengths of the ensemble."

In June, Irmo High School was one of many schools who submitted performance recordings to the South Carolina Band Directors Association, a division of the South Carolina Music Educators Association, to be considered as a featured ensemble at the Professional Development Conference. A committee of music educators evaluates the performance recordings and selects the top groups. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble at Irmo High School was one of only two high school bands who were invited to perform at the conference.

Irmo High School principal Dr. Robin Hardy said, “As an arts magnet school, I can think of no better way to highlight the gifts our students bring to us every day. We celebrate this opportunity to showcase to the state what Irmo has to offer.”
