Gas leak in Irmo causes concern for management of assisted living facility

Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) – A contractor hit and severed a gas line on Woodrow Street in front of Generations of Irmo Thursday afternoon. Generations is a high-end assisted living facility with numerous building, residents, and staff. They also have a Memory Care unit that deals with patient suffering from illnesses like dementia. The Irmo Fire District responded with several trucks and chief officers. They were assisted by officers with the Irmo Police Department.

When firefighters arrived, a representative of Generations met them and explained the situation at the facility. Fire commanders coordinated with the management of Generations to ensure the residents were safe during the entire incident.

Dominion Energy responded and asked that the railroad be notified that they would need to stop all train traffic during the incident. Firefighters in full safety gear continually monitored gas levels all around the area while repairs were underway.

At 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, the area was still closed as Dominion employees worked to repair the break. We will try and update this story as more information become available.
