Coroner says motorcyclist killed in accident on I-20 Saturday night

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said just before noon Sunday that a 44-year-old man was killed after a motorcycle accident on Saturday night. According to the coroner, Jeffrey J. Wurtzel of Columbia died at the scene of the accident around 10 p.m. on September 28, 2019. This happened on I-20 west at about the 63 mile marker near St Andrews.

Fisher said that troopers have indicated Wurtz laid his bike down on I-20 near I-26. He was wearing a helmet and troopers say he survived the original crash but was struck by another vehicle before he could get off the interstate. The vehicle that struck and killed him did not stop.

Troopers are still investigating the crash. This is the third fatal crash in Lexington County in the last week. One earlier in the week also claimed the life of a motorcyclist.
