Mobile home destroyed by fire near Pelion Wednesday afternoon

Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) – A mobile home was destroyed by fire on Catherine Drive off Lane Drive and Bub Shumpert Road Wednesday afternoon. This is between Pelion and Fairview. The fire was first reported around 5:00 p.m.

Firefighters that were enroute could see heavy smoke before the arrived. When they pulled up, they reported a mobile home was fully involved and a grass fire was burning away from the house and the main body of the fire. More firefighters continued to arrive, and some set up to attack the fire while others established a water supply.

At the height of the fire, the teams had several handlines on the ground fighting the structure that was burning. They had at least one more hose in service that was dealing with the grass fire. Because of the extent of the blaze when the first trucks arrived, it took about an hour to bring the fire under control. It took even more time to ensure it was completely out. The fire’s incident commander requested a tractor from Lexington County’s Public Works Department to come and pull the home apart so that all hot spots could be extinguished. Only after all these were dealt with was the fire listed as out.

As with all working structure fires, crews from Lexington County EMS respond to help monitor the health and wellness of any firefighters or civilians on scene that may have been under physical and emotional stress. Law enforcement officers also play a key role as does personnel from utility companies.
