Gaston, SC - Sandhills Middle School (SMS) students Angel Chen and Phoenix Bennett are learning new skills and expanding their creativity in Ms. Michaela Chandler's art class. Ms. Chandler earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Art Education, from the University of South Carolina. This is her first year at SMS, and she is participating in The Carolina Teacher Induction Program, a partnership between Lexington Four and the University. The students created displays of their names that now line the hallways in the school. The artwork shows what students have learned about how colors and patterns work together.

Phoenix talked about the difference between cool and warm colors and how they elicit different emotions in people. For example, Phoenix said, “cool colors like green, blue, and purple create a calming feel.” Angel explained the warm color tones saying, “warm colors like red, yellow and orange can create different feelings from comfort to anger.” They both talked about adding patterns to their work to create dimension.
