Mobile home destroyed by fire in West Columbia Thursday afternoon

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A mobile home off Sunset Boulevard at Leaphart Street in West Columbia caught fire and burned just after noon Thursday. Lexington County’s 911 Center dispatched personnel and trucks from the City of West Columbia, Cayce, and Lexington County to fight the fire at approximately 12:46 p.m.

The first arriving fire units reported that the mobile home was well involved in flames when they pulled up. The burning home was back away from the road in an area surrounded by woods. Teams began stretching lines and attacking the fire while a water supply was established from a nearby fire hydrant. This connection, using large diameter hose, created traffic problems on Sunset for a short time during the period that the supply line was in the road. Law enforcement officers helped direct traffic to keep vehicles off the hoses until the fire was out and everything was picked up.

Officials with the West Columbia Fire Department haven’t released the cause of the fire. Last week, a vacant home burned in the same general vicinity. That fire was a bit further west off Sunset. The cause of that fire is still under investigation by Lexington County.
