Coroner identifies the victim of motorcycle versus deer accident on Hwy. 378

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the woman who was killed when a motorcycle she was a passenger on struck a deer Saturday. The accident occurred at approximately 11:35 a.m. on U.S. 378 west of Lexington near the Jake Knotts bridge.

According to Coroner Fisher, Ruth Hunt Payne, 53, of Lexington was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries she sustained. The motorcycle on which Mrs. Payne was the passenger, struck a deer that ran into the roadway as she and her husband were riding with a group. Both Payne and her husband who was driving, were wearing helmets when the accident occurred. He was transported by helicopter to an area hospital in very serious condition.

The accident was investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
