Train hits vehicle at Old Dunbar Road crossing early Tuesday

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – A train hit a vehicle in the 1800 block of Old Dunbar Road early Tuesday morning. The accident, which was reported around 4:00 a.m., shut down the road as paramedics, firefighters, and law enforcement officers worked with the railroad to try and rescue the injured and clear the mess away.

The first call regarding the wreck came in from the law enforcement arm of the railroad. Their engineer had radioed his dispatch advising the train had hit something at the crossing. When firefighters arrived, they reported that there was someone trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle. Emergency crews worked quickly to free the victim/s before packing up and leaving the scene in the hands of troopers from the SC Highway Patrol. It appeared as if at least one patient was being transported by Lexington EMS to a local hospital.

This area of the county is home to many light and medium industrial facilities. It is crisscrossed with train tracks and sidings that service some of those businesses. A pedestrian was on the tracks and was struck by a train in the same general area last month. That person was injured but lived. We will update this throughout the day as more information becomes available.
