Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington police officers say that a woman who was intoxicated before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle is under arrest after causing a serious wreck in Lexington late Tuesday. They believe her poor decision caused a head-on collision that sent the occupant of the other vehicle and the impaired woman to a local hospital. The wreck happened in the 5300 block of Augusta Road just before midnight.
According to the police, the driver that caused the collision crossed over the median and was driving the wrong way when she struck another vehicle. Police, EMTs, and firefighters responded to deal with the aftermath of the collision that spread fluids and debris across the road. At one point, they had much of Augusta Road closed while emergency personnel worked to clear away the crashed vehicles. Eventually, both the intoxicated driver and the person who was in the other vehicle were transported to the hospital and treated for injuries they received in the collision. Police say that once the impaired driver is cleared by medical staff, she will be booked into the county jail.
The Lexington Police Department has a traffic division that focuses on just that, traffic. All their officers, however, are diligent in their search for impaired drivers. They take a zero-tolerance position when it comes to people getting drunk or high and driving. If you see someone driving that you think may be impaired, call *HP from any cell phone. In Lexington County, you can reach most municipal law enforcement agencies’ dispatch center by dialing (803) 785-2521. If you’re not sure whether you are in a town or the county, or if it appears that driver is causing a life-threatening situation, you can always dial 911.
