Occupant trapped under vehicle that overturned near Mack Edisto

Mack Edisto, SC (Paul Kirby) – An occupant of a vehicle that overturned Sunday morning was trapped underneath the vehicle until first responders could free him using special rescue tools. This heavy rescue was a joint effort of EMTs, firefighters, and law enforcement officers from Lexington County who were all on the scene. They were also assisted by SC State Troopers.

The crash reportedly occurred in the 2300 block of Whetstone Road between Swansea and Mack Edisto just before 10:00 a.m. Crews from Lexington County’s EMS were dispatched and several units including a supervisor responded. They were assisted by firefighters who are stationed in the southeastern portion of the county and law enforcement officers dispatched from their normal patrols to the scene of the wreck.

Apparently, one person who was involved in the crash, came out of the vehicle as it overturned. That man’s torso was trapped underneath the truck. Firefighters used special tools to first stabilize the vehicle before lifting it off that patient. The trapped man's condition hasn't been released by officials. A member of his immediate family said Monday that he had passed away.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol.
