Swansea High School students participate in National Manufacturing Month

Swansea, SC - Swansea High School students have recognized October’s National Manufacturing Month, which showcases careers in the manufacturing sector. According to the South Carolina Department of Commerce, 86% of the new jobs created in the state since 2011 are in the manufacturing industry.

At SHS, the welding program is preparing students to enter into the manufacturing field by offering them opportunities to earn American Welding Society (AWS) certifications. Students who complete the SHS welding program may enter Midland Technical College’s Welding Program and exempt 9 hours of coursework. Companies like Nucor, Engineering Solutions, and Metals and Alloys help students by providing resources such as guest speakers, personal protective equipment, and cutting edge technology.

Business partnerships are critical to student success. SHS’s first class to complete the welding program was in 2018. Since that time, over a dozen students have been hired to embark on their careers in the field of manufacturing.
