Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – Chapin High School graduate and retired SLED agent James “Byron” Williams will be honored at a celebration of his life with a funeral to be held in St. Andrews Monday. Williams was killed in a tragic accident near Swansea last Thursdays. He died working at the GTR Sportsmen’s Complex where he truly loved to be, outdoors and close to nature and open spaces. He was 59 years old.
Williams was born August 21, 1960 in Orangeburg, SC. He grew up in Chapin off Old Lexington Highway. He graduated Chapin High School in the late 1970's. From an early age, there was never any question that Byron would be in law enforcement. It was his dream and passion. He was a firearms expert that worked after retirement at the Gun Counter of Sportsman’s Warehouse on Piney Grove Road in St. Andrews.
Byron was the son of the late Henry Williams and Peggy Lott Williams. Besides his work as a SLED agent, he was an avid hunter, outdoorsman and expert marksman. He loved spending time with his children.
Byron is survived by his daughter, Lauren-Ann Williams; son, James Byron Williams, Jr; sister, Kim Williams Wilkerson (Alan); niece, Erin Beck; mother of his children, Terri Orred; and aunts and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Monday, November 4th, 2019 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. The church is located at 6952 St Andrews Road, Columbia, SC. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you do an act of kindness for someone in need, in memory of Byron.
