23-year old man perishes in collision on Columbia Airport Expressway

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County Chief Deputy Coroner Candace Berry, spokesperson for Coroner Margaret Fisher, released the name of the young man who was killed Sunday afternoon in a collision on Columbia Airport property. In her release, Coroner Fisher identified the victim as Alexander R. Jeffcoat, 23, of Lexington.

Coroner Fisher stated that this was a single vehicle accident that occurred on the Columbia Airport Expressway in West Columbia. This is the road that travels through the airport's property. It happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2019. According to Coroner Fisher, Jeffcoat was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries.

Her release went on to say that Jeffcoat’s vehicle left the right side of the roadway and overturned. He was not wearing a seat belt when the incident occurred. A passenger in the vehicle, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

A team of first responders from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport's Crash, Fire & Rescue Department were first to arrive on scene. They were quickly backed up by Lexington County EMS and the county's fire service.

The accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
