Dixiana, SC (Paul Kirby) – A home was heavily damaged by fire in the Dixiana portion of the county Wednesday evening. The home was on Miranda Drive in the Belle Meade subdivision of Charleston Hwy. near the Hwy. 321 south split.
The fire was dispatched shortly before 4:30 p.m. Fire trucks from a large part of southern Lexington County responded. This is an area with a private water system that struggles to provide the needed capacity to fight a fire. Usable hydrants are few and far between. For that reason, the county must send water tankers in the event that a usable hydrant is out of reach. That requires extra manpower if the tankers are used as each requires an operator.
Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack on the fire. Smoke was pouring from the home as they entered to locate the base of the fire. Once they discovered the point of origin, they made quick work of putting it out. Even though the fire was extinguished quickly, the house had heavy damage from the flames, smoke, and water. The family who lived there was displaced. Dominion Energy cut the power to the home as a precaution.
Most of the fire equipment was leaving the scene around 5:00 p.m. The battalion chief notified the American Red Cross so they could assist the family that was displaced. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined and there has been no estimate of the damages to the home have been released.
