Tow truck recovered after thief tries to harm business owner

Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – A wrecker from Toot’s Towing of Swansea was damaged after it was stolen earlier in the week. A short time after it was taken, the owner of the towing company found it and the thief who was driving it. According to Captain Adam Myrick of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, this all began as a case that the Swansea Police Department was working.

Myrick said that the thieves stole the tow truck from the Town of Swansea and fled into Lexington County. Eventually, the owner of the wrecker located it and tried to make the thief stop. Instead, the driver in the tow truck hit the vehicle the owner was in and then backed into his vehicle again. The owner, feeling he was in danger, produced a gun and shot at the truck and its occupant.

The tow truck fled that encounter but was later found on Meadowfield Road near Gaston wrecked. Investigators from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department’s Major Crimes Division responded. The SC Highway Patrol also was requested because of the wreck. After the truck was processed, it was turned back over to the owner of Toot’s Towing. At this point, no one has been taken into custody.
