South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert took a moment to swear in a legacy reserve police officer at Tuesday’s town council meeting. John, “Wink” Wilson will be patrolling the streets of South Congaree and responding to calls immediately. He has many of years of law enforcement experience and will not need any real field training with the department because he’s been very familiar with its operations over the years.
Wilson is described as a legacy officer for good reason. As a boy, he learned policing from his father Chief Wayne Wilson, who was South Congaree’s police chief for more than 20 years. Although Chief Wilson passed away a few years ago, his legacy lives on in the area. He was a one-of-a-kind law enforcement officer with street smarts and experience.
Chief Wilson’s wife and John's mother Jean was in attendance to watch her son be sworn in. She served as a South Congaree town councilmember several years ago.
Wilson comes from Benedict College where he was working on their public safety staff as a state constable. He and his wife are life-long residents of Lexington County and they have grown children and grandchildren.
