Accident on I-26 near Sandy Run kills two motorist Thursday

Sandy Run, SC (Paul Kirby) – An accident on I-26 near the 119 mm westbound killed two motorists who were in the same vehicle Thursday afternoon. The collision had traffic backed up for miles as SC state troopers worked to untangle the mess.

According to Master Trooper David Jones of the SC Highway Patrol, a Freightliner commercial box truck was travelling toward Columbia when it stopped in traffic. Another vehicle driving in the same direction hit the rear of the stopped truck and ended up coming to rest underneath it. The two people in the vehicle that struck the box truck were both killed. This occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2020.

Later Thursday, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the individuals who died as James G. Hoff, 78, and Terri Lee Hoff, 75, both of Fenton, Missouri. They were both pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple traumatic injuries. The driver of the box truck was not injured.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
