Motorcyclist killed in accident near Gilbert Wednesday

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Thursday afternoon, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher released more details of the incident and the name of the motorcyclist who was killed in a crash near Gilbert Wednesday. The motorcycle accident happened on Peach Festival Road near Waters Ferry Road just after 9:00 p.m. on February 12, 2020.

The coroner said that Steven E. Spires Sr., 55, of Gilbert was riding a motorcycle westbound on Peach Festival Road. Apparently, Spires came upon some slower traffic. In his attempt to slow down, he lost control of his bike and spilled it, throwing him off. He was gravely injured in the fall.

Spires was not wearing a helmet at the time and never struck any other vehicle. He was treated on the scene by personnel from Lexington County EMS who were assisted by firefighters. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later due to his injuries.

This incident is under investigation by troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
