Home damaged by fire on Mesa Verde Drive

Boiling Springs, SC (Paul Kirby) – A home was heavily damaged by fire on Mesa Verde Drive off Nazareth Road Sunday night. The fire was reported around 9:00 p.m.

911 communicators received several calls about this fire while emergency personnel from the Lexington County Fire Service and EMS were enroute. Callers were saying that flames were visible from the home and it was quickly intensifying.

When the first firefighters pulled up, they found smoke and heavy flames coming from the home. The battalion chief classified it as a working fire and began to set up his command structure and formulate a plan of attack.

Because there were fire hydrants in the area, all the crews were able to either fight fire or take their place in the command structure. In cases where there are no hydrants, a number of firefighters are needed just to drive and operate the water tankers to keep the personnel on fire attack supplied.

Firefighters quickly advanced their hoses and in a very short amount of time; they had the fire knocked down. They ventilated the home in order to rid it of dangerous smoke and gasses that can harm them as they breathe. At some point, some teams switched to salvage and overhaul trying to protect the home’s contents that weren’t already damaged by the water and smoke.

Even though the teams from Lexington County did a good job, the home was damaged to the point that it displaced the family. They were receiving assistance until they could begin the process of recovering from the tragedy this week.
