Mobile home destroyed by fire near Chapin Saturday

Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) – A mobile home was destroyed by fire Saturday before noon near Chapin. The fire burned the home on Olin Slice Road off Crooked Creek Road just east of the town.

Before firefighters arrived, the mobile home was well involved and was putting up a column of black smoke that could be spotted from the waters of Lake Murray. Multiple people had dialed 911 before the first trucks and crews arrived.

Lexington County has three fire stations in the Chapin area but because the closest fire hydrants were on Hwy. 76, tanker trucks from other counties assisted with the fire. Although it didn’t take firefighters long to bring the fire under control, it did take a good bit longer to ensure it was completely out. Firefighters returned later in the day in order to check for rekindles and to make sure that the fire never restarted or caused additional problems.

The mobile home was a total loss. The cause of the blaze hasn’t been released.
