UPDATE: South Congaree police major pursues fleeing vehicle passed Garners Ferry Road before stoppin

South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – South Congaree Police Department Major S. Jonas was on patrol Thursday afternoon when he attempted to stop a vehicle for a violation in the town. Jonas didn’t know that by the time he got the vehicle stopped, he’d cross multiple jurisdictions and finally got the female driver to pull over with help from deputies with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

After Jonas activated his warning devices and tried to stop the vehicle, instead of pulling over, the driver accelerated in an attempt to flee. Eventually, the suspect and the pursuing police cruiser were joined by other officers from several other departments who were vectoring in from across the area to try and stop the fleeing suspect.

The chase made it onto I-77 where traffic was fairly light as the two cars looped around Columbia headed toward Charlotte, NC or I-20. The entire time, Major Jonas pursued the car, he was calling ahead for other departments to get in front of the car and try to get it stopped. Eventually, near Garners Ferry Road, a Richland County deputy was waiting for the pair and he and other officers joined in, eventually they brought the chase to a halt near Jackson Boulvard and I-77.

The female driver was taken into custody quickly. At this time, she has been charged with Failure to Stop for Blue Lights, Possession of Crack Cocaine, Driving Under Suspension 4th Offence, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, and Habitual Traffic Offender 3rd. She was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center where she will be held until a bong hearing is held.
