Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – Officers and firefighters from the Cayce Department of Public Safety responded to the EconoLodge in the 1900 block of Charleston Highway Wednesday evening after a vehicle ran inside the building. The wreck caused major damage to a portion of the building. Once Cayce’s personnel arrived on scene, they requested assistance from Lexington County. The county has a specially equipped collapse truck loaded with equipment to deal with structural damage.
The vehicle went into the building just underneath an apartment on the second floor that’s permanently lived in. At one point, fire officials were afraid if they moved the vehicle, the amount of damage to the structure itself might cause it to collapse. The Lexington County personnel, assisted by Cayce officers, were able to use shoring material to stabilize the building so the vehicle could be removed.
It is believed that there were no serious injuries caused by the crash. A small portion of the motel is heavily damaged. Cayce officers have not yet said what caused the driver to lose control and run into the building.
We will update with more information as it becomes available.
