Wednesday wreck on SC Hwy. 6 breaks pole, drops electrical lines, brings traffic to a halt

Sharpes Hill, SC (Paul Kirby) – Several vehicles left the road Wednesday evening just after 6:00 p.m. and struck a power pole, breaking it in half. This brought down all the lines attached to it putting some homes nearby in the dark. Some of the lines landed across at least on of the vehicles and others were on the ground when firefighters first arrived on the scene near SC Hwy. 6 and Deer Moss Trail.

That entire section of SC Hwy. 6 was completely blocked off by the firefighters first and later by law enforcement officers. The evening commute was coming to an end, but traffic still began to back up quickly. Some motorists quickly flipped back toward Edmund Hwy. to detour around. Others just sat in the traffic and waited for law enforcement to advise them what to do.

The utility company that owns that section of line eventually arrived on the scene. They had to replace the pole before they could begin attaching the downed lines to the new one.

Both Lexington County EMS and several county fire stations responded. The fire service stood by until they were released by troopers with the SC Highway Patrol. The condition of the occupant/s of the truck is unknown. The SCHP is investigating the collision.
