Coroner Fisher identifies Gaston man killed in vehicle accident

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the man who died as a result of vehicle collision that happened in the 1000 block of Woodtrail Drive near Gaston Thursday. The wreck happened at approximately 10:40 a.m. on March 19, 2020.

According to Coroner Fisher, Derek Avery Butler, 56, of Gaston was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries he received in the crash. Butler was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

Fisher said that it appeared as if Butler was traveling southbound when an oncoming vehicle crossed the center line and the two collided. Butler had a passenger riding in his vehicle and there was a passenger in the other vehicle when the wreck happened. The other driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment of what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The collision is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
