West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A storage building on West Hospital Drive near the Lexington Medical Center’s campus caught fire Thursday afternoon. The fire, which was called into Lexington County’s 911 center by hospital staff, contained a tractor and some other maintenance equipment.
Because of other working fires in the West Columbia vicinity, the Irmo Fire District assisted the Lexington County Fire Service and the City of West Columbia’s Fire Department by responding. When the first firefighters arrived, they reported that heavy smoke was coming from the building.
Crews forced entry into the structure and attacked the fire that was consuming the equipment and items stored inside. In a very short time, they had the fire knocked down, under control, and then reported it was out.
There has been no official release as to what else was stored in the building or destroyed by the fire. The building’s owners also have not released the suspected cause of the blaze.
