One fatality reported as vehicle strikes bicyclist on Fish Hatchery Road

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A vehicle struck a bicyclist on Fish Hatchery Road early Sunday afternoon claiming the life of one person. The accident happened in the 4100 block between the Gaston and Sharpe’s Hill areas. Eyewitnesses at the scene confirmed that law enforcement officers and personnel from the Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher’s office were there investigating circumstances surrounding the wreck.

Little details are available at this point regarding the collision. It is known that this happened between noon and 1:00 p.m. on Mothers’ Day Sunday, May 10, 2020. Lexington County’s 911 center was notified quickly by various callers. The County’s Telecommunications Center sent Lexington County EMS units and personnel to the scene. The County’s fire service and law enforcement officers also responded. The person was riding the bike was deceased on arrival.

The SCHP’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) normally responds to the scene of these collisions at some point. According to The SC Department of Public Safety’s website at www.scdps.sc.gov, this unit investigates complicated vehicle crashes, using state-of-the-art technology and analysis to reconstruct the scene. They use these reconstructions leading up to the collision and at the point of impact that may be used in court if a crime has occurred and to help identify hazards.

Coroner Margaret Fisher’s office will notify the victim’s family prior to releasing the decedent’s name or any details of the crash to the public. That could be at any point in the future.
