Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – Officers with the Cayce Department of Public Safety booked a man into the Lexington County Detention Center this week after he turned himself in on the morning of May 18th, 2020. Derrell Jamal Simons, 24, of Gadsen, SC was wanted in regard to a shooting that occurred last weekend in the city.
According to First Sergeant Evan Antley, spokesman for the Cayce Department of Public Safety, Simons was involved in a shooting that took place early on the morning of Sunday, May 17, 2020. The shooting happened at a home where a small party was being held. The home is on Fairlawn Circle in Cayce. There were several people there and some had been drinking and smoking weed during the party.

Witnesses told officers that Simons had been wrestling back and forth with another man at the party for most of the night. Eventually, things got more heated and Simons grabbed the other man, slamming him to the floor. In the process, Simons’ chain necklace was broken. Things escalated after that.
Witnesses told officers that Simons went in and out of the house several times in a state of rage after the chain was broken. He was eventually asked to leave because he appeared to be highly intoxicated. The last time that Simons walked outside, he apparently retrieved something from his car. The other man stepped outside to see if Simons had gone. As he exited the home, Simons asked, “How you want it cuz,” before opening fire on the man with a semi-automatic firearm.
One witness said that Simons fired five or six rounds toward the man and the house before fleeing the scene in his car. As Simons fired, the other man turned and ran away. He was not hit; however, a woman was struck by a round. She was transported to a local hospital by Lexington County EMS with a non-life-threatening injury to her foot.
First Sergeant Antley said that Simons has been charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, Possession of A Firearm During the Commission of a Violent Crime and Discharging a Firearm Into a Dwelling. As of Friday at noon, the Lexington County Detention Center’s website's inmate search feature did not show a Derrell Jamal Simons was still being detained there.
