Collision on Old Barnwell Road injures several seriously Wednesday afternoon

Pine Grove, SC (Paul Kirby) – A collision on Old Barnwell Road at White Knoll Way seriously injured several people and caused first responders to completely close the road Wednesday afternoon. Crews from Lexington County EMS and the fire service were dispatched to a call for help around 2:15 p.m. on May 27, 2020.

When first emergency crews arrived, they quickly assessed the scene and reported that Old Barnwell Road was closed. They found several people in the vehicles were seriously injured, and care of the victims injured in the crash began.

After their initial assessment, firefighters advised their dispatch center that there was someone trapped in the wreckage of the tangled vehicles. They requested additional equipment with extrication tools respond. Other crews from Oak Grove, Red Bank, and South Congaree were dispatched and another truck that was near the scene also responded. Once these trained crews arrived, they deployed their hydraulic rescue tools and quickly freed the trapped patient.

EMS treated all patients on the scene before quickly loading them for transport to the appropriate hospital for care. At least one was taken to Prisma Health’s Palmetto Richland campus for the higher level of care provided by their Level 1 Trauma Center. A firefighter drove that ambulance in so that the full attention of the EMS crew could be focused on the seriously injured patient.

The road was reopened after all the patients were transported, the emergency crews were all out of the way, and the wreckage was removed to allow motorists to travel through. The collision is being investigated by the SC Highway Patrol.
