District promotes Funderburk to coordinator of preschool special education

Lexington, SC - During the June 2, 2020 meeting, the Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees approved the promotion of Cindy C. Funderburk to coordinator of preschool special education, effective July 1. Funderburk is a dedicated special educator with nine years of experience.

Funderburk joined Lexington District One in 2011 as a preschool special education teacher at Lake Murray Elementary School. She taught at LMES for four years before becoming a preschool special education itinerant teacher for the district. In this role, from 2015–2019, she traveled to private preschools and elementary schools across the county, teaching students during specialized lessons each week and assisting with screenings for preschoolers who might need further evaluation for special education services.

From 2017–2019, she also supported other special services efforts such as creating professional development opportunities for educators, developing processes and guidelines, interviewing prospective teachers and planning extended school year programs.

Last year, she transitioned into a district-level role as elementary special services curriculum specialist where she provides specialized instruction to teachers, prescribes curriculum and instruction for students, and collaborates with special educators throughout the district.

Funderburk earned a Bachelor of Arts in education and a Master of Education in special education from Clemson University. She also earned a Master of Education in education administration from the University of South Carolina. She is currently working toward a Doctorate in Education in special education leadership from South Carolina.

She is a member of the Council of Exceptional Children’s Division for Early Childhood and the Council of Administrators of Special Education.
