Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – The driver of the Nissan that crossed the center line of Hwy. 6 near Blackville Road and struck a pickup truck killing its driver last Sunday morning, has now been arrested and charged with felony DUI involving a death. The SC Highway Patrol brought the charges after an investigation by their specially trained and equipped M.A.I.T. team.
Jason Alexander Gregory, 44, was denied bond Wednesday morning by a Lexington County judge. He is currently in the Lexington County Detention Center awaiting trial.
Gregory allowed his vehicle to drift left of the highway’s center line. When he collided with the pickup truck, Juan Carols Chavero of Swansea, the driver and only occupant in the truck, died at the scene.
A close friend of the family said Sunday that Chavero was a wonderful person whose family had legally immigrated to America decades ago. He was a graduated of Swansea High School and worked across South Carolina. “He was always willing to help anyone who need his assistance,” the friend said. “I’ve seen him fix decks and do other repairs to homes for free when people just couldn’t afford to pay for his work. He was a family man and a great person. His family is devastated, they lost a son and father Sunday morning and the Swansea community lost a great man and servant,” he concluded.
Chavero's family is having a fundraiser to assist with funeral arrangements. If you would like to assist the family with the expenses, you can do that by clicking here.
