South Congaree police investigate shooting that occurred Saturday night

South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – Officers from the South Congaree Police Department were investigating a shooting Saturday night that took place in the Lexington County town that is close to the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. This incident took place in the 500 block of Ramblin Road near the Congaree Downs neighborhood.

South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert said that one person was transported by Lexington County EMS to a local trauma center with injuries considered as serious. The chief said that several rounds struck the man in the torso, but he and his team had talked with the man’s medical team and they were considering the wounds non-life-threatening. Shumpert said those trauma specialists were making every effort to treat the injured man, and he believed he was scheduled for surgery once they had stabilized him.

Chief Shumpert said the 500 block of Ramblin Road had been closed in both directions late into the night Saturday. “Help from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department was invaluable during our investigation,” Shumpert said. “Lexington County’s personnel processed the entire crime scene which allowed us the opportunity to interview witnesses and gather their statements.”

“The public has no cause to be alarmed,” the chief said around 10 p.m. Saturday night. “This was not some random act of violence and we are quickly making progress in our investigation. We have identified and interviewed all parties involved and are not currently seeking any suspects. We sincerely appreciate the assistance of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. They dispatched technicians immediately upon request, which was within moments of us getting the initial call reporting this shooting.” Chief Shumpert said that the investigation into this shooting is ongoing.
