Summer Project: Build for West Columbia’s Kinetic Derby Day, September 26, 2020

West Columbia, SC (June 22, 2020, at 11:24 AM) — Register now to participate in West Columbia’s 3rd Annual Kinetic Derby Day on Saturday, September 26, 2020. This year brings new opportunities for fun with family and friends with new obstacles for the Kinetic Sculpture Parade, including a “dirty run” and a “clean run”! Building a sculpture or car makes the perfect family and friends social distancing project.

West Columbia’s Kinetic Derby Day committee is actively working with schools, artists, and businesses to engage broad community participation. To register to race, participate in the kinetic sculpture parade, for volunteer opportunities, and more information go to www.kineticderbyday.com. Registration ends on September 23, 2020.

Kinetic sculptures are human-powered 3D representations bringing imagination to life using pedal power, as an individual or as a team. A team may include multiple members on a bike with themed costumes or multiple participants in costumes riding or walking along with a sculpture that includes kinetic movement. The kinetic sculpture can be as simple as someone in costume riding a bike or more elaborate structures like the Moby and the Admiral or The Snow Queen that appeared in last year’s parade.

The inaugural event, in April of 2018, drew over 40 soapbox racing and parade entries. Now in the 3rd year, Kinetic Derby Day is adding obstacle components to create a challenging environment for the Kinetic Sculptures to race. The “dirty run” will include obstacles involving fun ways to get messy, inspired by the Kinetic Sculpture Race in Kensington, PA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2odd5bKEpE).
