Suspicious abandoned home fire in Dixiana being investigated

Dixiana, SC (Paul Kirby) – An abandoned double-wide mobile home on Pallet Drive off Dixiana Road burned Thursday afternoon. The fire burning the home, which was reported shortly before 3:00 p.m., was fully involved when firefighters arrived. As crews from Lexington County’s Station #33 in the Lexington County Industrial Park pulled out of their station and turned onto Charleston Highway, they reported seeing heavy smoke in the sky from some distance away.

Firefighters from across southern Lexington County responded. They used tanker trucks to deliver most of the water they needed to put out the burning structure. There were fire hydrants present but laying a supply hose into the fire would have required stretching the hose across the railroad tracks, stopping the train. They hesitated to do that since the structure appeared to have been abandoned for some time.

The fire was draining on the crews because of the hot weather. A special rehab truck responded, and EMS was on scene in the event that anyone became overwhelmed.

Once the fire was under control, the fire’s incident commander quickly asked for a deputy from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department to respond to make a suspicious fire report. That was done. Now, it will be up to law enforcement to carry the investigation further. They may request assistance from the fire service if necessary.
