St. Andrews, SC (Paul Kirby) – Two Lexington County sheriff’s deputies assigned to the North Region of the county have been shot and wounded while on the scene of a domestic violence call on Cottonwood Lane near Bush River Road in the St. Andrews area of Lexington County. This is in the Woodland Village apartment complex. Preliminary reports indicate both received what is considered to be non-life-threatening injuries.
It has been reported that the deputies faced a man that appeared to be unstable. He was armed with a gun and was using a small child as a shield between himself and the deputies. At some point, the deputies felt the man with the gun was endangering their lives. Who fired first hasn't been made public yet but the deputies and the man got into a gun battle that ended with all three at the hospital.
The three that were wounded were transported to the Trauma Center at Prisma Health’s Palmetto Richland Hospital. Sheriff Jay Koon was at the hospital Sunday evening where he was checking on his personnel.
According to Sheriff Koon, the suspect was out on bond in connection to a 2017 Richland County homicide. Koon said after the shooting, "We appreciate the outpouring of support. It’s very refreshing when you see what’s going on across the country to know we live in a place that supports law enforcement."
This investigation was immediately handed over to SLED which is standard procedure. No more information is available at this point.
