West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – Detectives from the West Columbia Police Department were in the early stages of an investigation into a traffic collision that killed one person Saturday afternoon. This happened on Platt Springs Road near White Avenue at a point where the City of West Columbia and the Town of Spingdale are just a few blocks apart.
The collision occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Saturday August 15, 2020. West Columbia police officers were the first to arrive on scene after someone called 911.

The first officers who arrived on scene reported that one person involved in the collision was unconscious and was not breathing. Police officers were quickly followed by personnel from the West Columbia Fire Department and a supervisor from Lexington County’s EMS. It was that supervisor who determine one person involved had died on the scene.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher’s Office was notified. It will be up to that office to determine the victim’s exact cause of death and to notify the decedent’s family. Until Coroner Fisher has done that, the victim’s identity will not be released.
Investigators were just beginning the process of reconstructing the accident at approximately 2:40 p.m. They had announced that Platt Springs Road between White Avenue and Shirley Street would be closed for an extended period of time as they worked. The results of their investigation may not be available for some time.
