Pine Grove, SC (Paul Kirby) – A suspect who shot a Lexington County Sheriff’s Deputy is in custody after a stand-off that lasted nearly 12 hours. Officers say the situation was resolved with the removal of the suspect from the home and his subsequent arrest about 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
According to law enforcement officials, the entire situation began when a man and his wife were involved in a domestic situation Saturday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. The man’s wife was able to flee their home in the Manchester Park neighborhood off Old Barnwell Road and call 911.
Deputies were dispatched and arrived quickly. Within a short time of their arrival, the man fired a shot striking one of the deputies in his upper body. That deputy was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was released later Saturday night. The man then barricaded himself into the home and refused to come out.
Officers with Special Tactical teams from across the Midlands responded to assist the sheriff’s department in securing the neighborhood. Negotiators from several agencies then began trying to contact the man. They did eventually establish a line off communications with him.
The name of the suspect has not been released. There also has been no further information about how he was removed from the home provided at this time.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department received assistance form SLED, the SC Highway Patrol, the City of Columbia Police Department, and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department during the stand-off.
