Airport High School Student Council brings home top honors

West Columbia, SC 03/17/2021 - Airport High School brought home top honors from the 73rd annual state convention of the South Carolina Association of Student Councils.

Airport was recognized as a Gold Council of Excellence for the fifth consecutive year. In addition, sophomore Liz Schaffer was elected 2021-2022 SCASC President. Airport will be host to the organization’s state convention in March 2022.

“I've been part of SCASC for several years, and my favorite part has always been the state convention,” Schaffer said. “I'm really excited to bring this event home to Airport High School.”

“Our state-wide numbers have been hurt by COVID, as we've had to either cancel or go virtual with our biggest events,” Schaffer added. “My goal as SCASC president for the upcoming year is to increase our numbers by hosting a memorable state convention.”

Among other recognitions for Airport at this year’s convention, hosted virtually March 12-13 by Spring Hill High School:

  • Airport’s council placed third for Video Project of the Year for Trick-or-Treat Lane.

  • Junior McKenna Barfield was inducted into the Terry McCoy Leadership Hall of Fame.

  • Senior Sydney Coleman served the conference in her role as State Corresponding Secretary.

Airport teacher Daniel Bailey, one of Student Council’s advisers, said the Gold Council recognition has special meaning this year.

"This award shows that the Student Council of Airport High continues to serve their school and community in the most challenging of times,” Bailey said. “Even with the typical school year looking vastly different, these students still worked extremely hard to keep some of our best kept school and community traditions alive."

CAPTION: Airport High sophomore Liz Schaffer was elected president of the South Carolina Association of Student Councils.
