American Legion Post #90 holds solemn event to retire American Flags

South Congaree, SC - 04/20/2021 (Paul Kirby) – American Legion Post 90, located near South Congaree, SC, will hold a solemn service to retire old or worn American Flags. It will be this Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 6:00 pm at the South Congaree Equestrian Arena. That is located at 395 Oak Street, West Columbia, SC.

In the United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k states that, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” This ceremony follows that code and will be done appropriately by the members of Post 90.

Everyone is invited to bring old, worn or faded American Flags for proper disposal. Even if you don’t have a flag that needs to be retired, you can come and bring your family to see this solemn ceremony. It would be a great way to teach your children about the history and heritage behind the most prominent symbol of our nation.
