West Columbia, SC 08/13/2025 (Paul Kirby) – Augusta Road (US Hwy 1) was closed for a portion of the day Wednesday after a powerline was knocked down across all lanes of the road near Lowe’s. Additionally, the ramps on and off I-26 at exit 111 were also closed.
The City of West Columbia’s Police and Fire Departments responded and stopped traffic until Dominion Energy could get on the scene and deenergize the line before restringing it across the road. Traffic was detoured around the wires until the repairs were completed.
This is the second time in the last few months these lines have fallen across the road. It’s unclear whether oversized loads are catching the wires or something else is causing the problem. It will be up to engineers with Dominion to see if a redesign is warranted.
