Bojangles shooting suspect’s charges upgraded to murder Thursday morning

Chapin, SC 02/03/2022 (Paul Kirby) - Warren Bruce Rumph Jr., the suspect who Chapin Police investigators say shot a coworker at the Bojangles on Columbia Avenue Wednesday afternoon, has now been charged with murder after the person he shot died overnight. According to a spokesperson for the Town’s Police Department, Rumph shot the young man after the two had a disagreement that escalated into violence around 4 p.m. at the restaurant Wednesday.

As soon as the shooting was reported, police officers, EMTs, and firefighters responded and arrived on the scene quickly. As the law enforcement officers secured the scene, the medical personnel assisted by the firefighters began providing advanced life support care to the injured man. Although the young man was breathing and had a heartbeat when he was transported from the scene to the local trauma center, he was in critical condition and unable to survive the gunshot wound to his head.
In their statement, the Chapin Police Department took the time to thank their law enforcement partners who helped with this case. Those agencies included the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, and the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division.
