Boy Scouts finish 50-mile canoe this afternoon at Dreher Island State Park
Lake Murray, SC 06/30/2021 - Local members of the Boy Scouts of America are putting the “outing” back in “Scouting” in fine fashion throughout the Midlands this summer. This includes a group of Scouts from Troop 312 in Irmo, SC. They will wrap-up a canoe and kayak paddling trip from Lake Greenwood to Lake Murray today, Wednesday, June 30th, 2021. Fifteen Scouts and five adults will emerge at 5:30 this afternoon at the docks of Dreher Island State Park.
The group’s adventure started in Lake Greenwood this past weekend. Since the launched, they've portaged the dam and proceeded down the Saluda River, entering Lake Murray one-day ahead of schedule. The Scout paddlers are working towards the BSA’s coveted “50-Miler Award” which recognizes Scouts for paddling that distance by boat.
The adventure is one of numerous activities of the Boy Scouts of America taking place in the Midlands this summer. The Scout's summer camp at Camp Barstow on Lake Murray has a record number of scouts prepared to attend after a year of Scouts having to stay home due to the pandemic.
